Legal case files and political and personal papers of United States Court of Appeals (8th Circuit) judge Gerald W. Heaney, a Duluth lawyer and Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party activist appointed to the appeals court bench in 1966. Case Files (1966-2006, 257 boxes) include correspondence and memoranda, court documents, transcripts, judicial opinions, clippings, and conference notes pertaining to appeals of lower court decisions in murder, drug, sexual abuse, product liability, immigration, robbery, age discrimination, and other cases, some involving the death penalty. Appellants and respondents include individuals, federal and state agencies, insurance companies and banks, labor unions, and prison inmates. Correspondents include fellow appeals court judges, appeals court staff, and attorneys. Some of the cases are from the second and fourth circuits. Judicial and Court-Related Files (35 boxes and 5 oversize folders) include information about a noted Nobles County (Minn.) farm bankruptcy case; school desegregation in Little Rock (Ark.) and Omaha (Neb.); prosecutions arising out of the occupation of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota (1973-1975); legislative reapportionment in Minnesota (1971-1972); and Minnesota political campaign funding (1976-1978). Non-Judicial, Personal and Political Files (10 boxes) include information concerning elections and politics; Democratic party orgainzations; economic development issues and projects in Duluth and northeastern Minnesota; tax issues; the proposed Taconite Amendment to the Minnesota constitution; and the University of Minnesota.
